Sensor City Bike Tour at New Museum’s IDEAS CITY Festival

Ever wondered what kinds of sensors surround you as you walk on the street, enter your home, and take public transit? Lower East Side locals and visitors to the New Museum’s IDEAS CITY Festival had a chance to notice these sensors for themselves as part of a SENSOR CITY bike tour of the Lower East Side. Cyclists–and one intrepid wheelchairist–were guided by Arlene to see the cameras, environmental sensors, and wireless communication devices embedded in buildings, wires, streets, phone booths, and poles. The group also had a few serendipitous chance encounters from the Director of Operations at the Lower East Side Girls Club, and from police officers who operate a mobile police station that surveys one of the largest public housing developments in New York. See the map of their journey and follow along with your own bike!
